On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
