Manchester United produced what observers are describing as a "defining" performance against reigning title holders Chelsea, though they were left wanting for more than the solitary point secured from the match.
United managed to halt Chelsea's 100% beginning to the current season as their defender's superb volley cancelled out the Chelsea player's brilliant first goal.
This result represented a significant outcome for the Red Devils, who had before this been defeated in 10 and tied just one of their prior eleven league meetings with the Blues.
However, manager Marc Skinner expressed "frustration" that his side secured only a draw rather than all three points as they extended their unbeaten run to five games.
During the game, Ella Toone missed opportunities on either side of the halftime, while teammate Jess Park should have converted with a chipped effort before coming close with a dipping volley.
Former England player Fara Williams commented: "I felt like Manchester United will probably be regretting missed opportunities. They generated numerous quality chances and perhaps with better finishing in the attacking area, they would have secured victory."
Nevertheless, Manchester United might have just as readily ended with no points from the match.
Goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce produced a excellent second-half save to prevent Chelsea's Keira Walsh, while the defenders Maya Le Tissier and Sandberg made crucial blocks during the final minutes to prevent Chelsea from scoring.
Former England shot-stopper Rachel Brown-Finnis added: "United are the first team to prevent Chelsea from winning against Chelsea this season. If they must put out a statement to their own club and reaffirm what Manchester United's ambition is, they've deserved all that."
Draw Demonstrates Progress of Developing Manchester United
This major inquiry at the beginning of this season - identical that's been posed over the previous six WSL seasons - is if anyone can end Chelsea's supremacy.
Chelsea won last season's trophy by going 22 games without defeat in Sonia Bompastor's first season as manager - part of a domestic treble as they lifted the Women's FA Cup and League Cup as well.
Actually, it's been more than 500 days since Chelsea last lost a league game - a four-three loss at Liverpool on May 1st, 2024.
Manchester United came close to ending that streak on Friday night in a top-two clash and Skinner was impressed of "the most brave performance" from his players.
The manager stated: "We're building. You can observe it, you can feel it. We are disappointed to have not won the game. The chances we created, few teams could create that against Chelsea. So for us to achieve that and in the way we did it was praise to them [the players]."
After their elevation from the Women's Championship in the 2018-19 season, United have rapidly emerged as WSL title contenders, ending up just two points behind Chelsea in 2022-23.
The next season they won the FA Cup - their first major women's honor.
Although a tie against the current league leaders may be deemed a chance not taken for United, ex- England striker White thought it demonstrated how far the club has progressed.
The pundit remarked: "One must look at that steady performance. They've played 11 times against Chelsea to date and only tied one time, now the second time, so I think it's really good for their consistency and what they're doing as a club and a squad. It proves it's effective and they're getting better."
Asked if Skinner deserved more recognition for United's ascent to challenge with more traditional clubs, the expert continued: "The work he's accomplished with these individuals, the philosophy, the DNA, how determined they are. He hasn't got the quantity of money or managed to spend the sum of money the such teams of Chelsea, Arsenal or [Manchester] City have done."
What Does This Affect the Title Race?
Chelsea's perfect start may have ended, but they still stay in first place on 13 points - two points clear of United.
But Skinner said his side's performance at the Progress With Unity Stadium - where Chelsea secured last season's title - proved the Blues won't have it quite as easy this season.
He added: "This proves to Chelsea they're not just going to run away with the league. We need to make sure everyone is providing a contest. I think the league is getting better and you saw the quality, that we are progressing as well."
Blues manager Bompastor was "displeased" with Chelsea's display, but stated a draw was "not a bad result at Manchester United".
Asked if United were title challengers, she responded: "There are many teams being genuine competition for us, every game presents a different challenge. You must be prepared for every game."
City, who were defeated to Chelsea in the season opener, might reduce the gap on the leaders to a single point if they defeat Arsenal at home on the weekend.
Last season's runners-up Arsenal, meanwhile, have work to make up after losing points against both United and Aston Villa, and boss Renee Slegers will be eyeing the Gunners' home game against Chelsea on 8 November as a way to get themselves back in the race.
